Top Tips
  • If, as a company, you are able to name drivers, you will usually be able to get cheaper insurance than if you have a blanket insurance policy for any company driver
  • Check what content your policy covers - expensive industrial tools and equipment may not be covered by a standard policy
  • Fully comprehensive insurance may be expensive for your van but, as it may be a major part of your business, it’s worth looking around at all the options

A van can be more than a vehicle; it can be the heart of a business and as such it will need special insurance, even if it is largely for domestic use.  Van insurance policies can cover your van for private or business use and will cater for the many purposes that a van can be used for.

Because a van may need to be driven by several members of a company it is possible for a company to insure the van itself rather than each individual driver. It’s also possible that an insurer will cover a fleet of vans under a company policy that gives a discount over individual vans.

Van owners can have particular requirements due to the business nature of the vehicles. Vans that are driven around building sites may need extra windscreen cover for instance and there may be special needs regarding contents of a van.

On applying for van insurance you will have to provide details on size, weight and usage of the van so that the premium can be calculated you will also be asked if you are a sole trader, private individual or limited company. Company policies that cover a number of vans will usually be cheaper.

If your business means that you take your van abroad you will have to make sure that the insurance that you choose allows foreign travel and if so what extra cover you need if any.
